The impact of offering Wagestream

Purple blue wave

Carole Crocker, Data Protection Officer at Iris Care Group, has expertly navigated the introduction of Wagestream, balancing the launch of a new financial wellbeing benefit with maintaining rigorous data privacy standards. Her experience offers a blueprint for best practices in this area.

"The overall objective of any organisation is to keep the people who use the service and the people who work in the service safe. Part of that safety is data protection."

Iris Care Group provides support to individuals with complex mental health conditions, learning disabilities, and autism. For Carole, ensuring that sensitive data about both employees and those they care for remains secure was a top priority when considering Wagestream.

"When Iris Care Group were considering Wagestream, I contacted the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) to get clarity about what we need to share and whether it is in compliance with the GDPR."

Carole and her team undertook comprehensive steps to prepare for the launch. This included updating and sharing privacy policies, providing transparent communication through newsletters and emails, and making herself available to answer any staff queries. These efforts ensured confidence among employees regarding the security of their data.

"We shared the privacy policy with staff, both internally and externally, and ensured no one could say, 'I've not been informed.'"

The results have been impactful. In less than a year, Iris Care’s employees have used Wagestream to save nearly £40,000 in rainy day pots and access over £240,000 of their pay flexibly. This has enabled many to save for the first time and build financial resilience.

"Because we did all that preparatory work and open communication, we've had no issues whatsoever. In my opinion, it's worked very well."

Carole’s experience demonstrates how careful planning, transparency, and collaboration can make the introduction of new benefits seamless while protecting the trust and data of employees.
